The Green Machine - Meal Replacement Smoothie

Ok girls....if you are looking for a great meal replacement smoothie then look no further.  

This Green Machine Smoothie is the perfect way to start your day with breakfast, give yourself the nutrients you need to replenish your muscles after a good workout, or a go to lunch option.  

First off....it's AMAZING.  Seriously, AMAZING.  I dare you not to love it. Secondly, it's loaded with things that you need like vitamins, antioxidants, 28g of protein and only 380 calories...SCORE!!!  

So here we go.  First you will need the following ingredients:

Ingredients List:

  • Vanilla Protein Powder

  • Unsweetened Coconut milk (or you could use almond if you prefer) - 1/2 cup

  • Frozen Pineapple - 3/4 cup

  • Orange Juice - no pulp - 1/2 cup

  • Spinach - 2 cups

  • Banana - 1/2

  • Chia Seeds - 1 tablespoons

You'll also need a good mixer.  I use a NutriBullet.  It does a fantastic job of getting it really smooth and creamy.  You could use a regular blender or any other type of mixing device you have around the house.

First off dump your pineapple and 1/2 banana into the mixer.

Then comes the protein powder.  Let's talk about this one for a second.  Here you can use whatever your favorite protein powder is.  Just make sure it is Vanilla flavor.  These days I'm loving the below protein powder made by Dot Fit called Best Plant Protein in Vanilla.

So a few things that I love about this particular protein powder:

  • 21g of protein

  • less than 1g of sugar

  • gluten free

  • plant based - so good for everyone, even kiddos - mine LOVE this smoothie!!!! 👍🏼

  • tastes fantastic

Again - any vanilla protein of your choice will do here, just keep in mind a few things to be on the lookout for when choosing a protein powder:

  • Low sugar - some protein powders get out of control on the sugar count!!

  • Keep the carbs low and the protein high

  • Also - always check how many scoops you need to use to get a serving. I say this because lots of times it requires 2 scoops of powder to get to 1 serving so that means that powder will run out faster than one that requires only 1 scoop for a serving.  The one I use here is only 1 scoop per serving.

Another protein powder that I really like that you could sub in here is the Tone It Up Vanilla Protein Powder. This one is also plant based, delicious, still very low carb and sugar count and is a little less pricy than the first option.

Ok...back to your smoothie.

Once you add in the protein powder, then add in your 1/2 cup of orange juice and 1/2 cup of unsweetened coconut milk.  I use unsweetened vanilla coconut milk.  You could substitute here with unsweetened vanilla almond milk as well if you prefer.  Just make sure it's unsweetened so that you keep your sugar count low.

Now time to add the chia seeds....but first some fun facts about chia seeds 😁

  1. Chia seeds are loaded with antioxidants which fight the production of free radicals, which can damage molecules in cells and contribute to aging - MEANS YOU LOOK YOUNGER  

  2. High in bone important nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and protein - MEANS STRONG BONES! 💪🏼

  3. High in fiber - MEANS KEEPS YOU FULLER LONGER!

You can pick up chia seeds at most health food stores - I get mine at sprouts.  Or there is always my favorite site in the world....Amazon 😊 where you can find them here.

Now your ready to dump in you're tablespoon of chia seeds.

Lastly, add in your spinach.  I typically just grab about 2 good handfuls to make measuring easy but if you need a precise amount, it's about 2 cups of loosely packed fresh spinach.

Now you're ready to fire up the mixer!

I usually let my NutriBullet run for about 10-15 seconds.  Then I stop it and shake it up a bit because sometimes things can get stuck in there. Then turn it back on for another 30 seconds or so and VOILA!!

Time to enjoy!!!! 

One other tip for any of you ladies who may need to travel with this smoothie....like perhaps out the door to work in the morning.  

So I juggle ALOT of cups in the morning...like the crazy cup lady....I take a giant 30oz yeti with me that I refill throughout the day to get my water in.  I also take a smaller yeti with me that I drink my morning coffee in during my commute to the office.  And sometimes, if I haven't finished my green drink (I'll explain that one to you in a future post) then I also take that in a shaker cup with me.  So needless to say, I don't have room for another cup that I have to lug around and wash most mornings....if you're anything like that and don't want to add yet another cup to your array of cups you're already carting around, I recently purchased these little beauties on amazon...of course :)

A great throw away option that you can just toss once you get to work or other final destination.  Also a good option if you make a to go smoothie for your hubby in the morning (because we love the men in our life enough to do that for them and keep them healthy too) and he is one that tends to leave his cups in the truck until they start to grow things 😩 and then you are left to clean it!  

For the straws though, make sure you get the milkshake straws....they are fatter and make it easier to sip the smoothie through.
