It's New Years Eve morning and I'm sitting here curled up in my cozy fur blanket, drinking coffee, and watching the snow begin to fall. We had ZERO chance of snow today so even though it's just the tiniest of flurries, my littles are pumped! ⛄️
Over the course of the last couple of weeks I have really been trying to put some thought, focus, and prayer into what I want out of 2018. What do I want to focus on bettering in 2018? What do I want to challenge myself with? There are really so many things to choose from but I'm the kinda girl that operates best if I have clear, simplified, and focused goals - and not too many of them. I find that when I have too many goals or tasks at a given time that it looses a lot of the focus. Things start to slip and fall by the wayside when you are trying to focus on too many things at once.
SO, in light of that, I have narrowed it down to 3 things that I want to focus on as my goals for 2018. I want to share them with you because I need accountability. Accountability is your best friend when it comes to sticking with a commitment and seeing it through - ESPECIALLY if your goal relates to things like fitness or eating healthy. Those are tough commitment...they can truly be life changing and transformational if you stick to them so having a loving friend and accountability partner to help you through it is an ABSOLUTE MUST! It's even better if you can find someone working towards a similar goal as you - that way you are cheering each other on for the same cause!
Either way, when you think about what you want to do in 2018 and what you want your goals to be, make them something that will make you better as a person. We know that spending time on ourselves, focusing on our goals and desires, and allowing that to be a priority in our lives will reap positive impacts on everyone around you. Better you = better relationships, better mom, better wife, better friend, better christian, the list goes on. When you focus on yourself and improving yourself, it will bring positivity to everything in your life.
Also, make sure your goals are challenging but also realistic. Don't go easy on yourself with a goal you know you will have no problem attaining. But also, don't make it so difficult that you are setting yourself up for disappointment or constant feelings of frustration and failure. Find a good balance.
And speaking of balance....that leads me to my first goal for 2018.
In the last few months I have dabbled a bit in yoga - just taking beginning type classes here and there a handful of times. Then back in October I was traveling for work in California and I took a bikram yoga class. If you aren't familiar with what bikram yoga is you can click here to learn more about it. But to sum it up it's a 90 minute hot yoga class (meaning the temperature is usually between 95-108 degrees) where you move through 26 different poses and focus a great deal on breathing. When I went into I thought "there is no way i'm going to get through an hour and half of yoga - I will be bored out of my mind!!" 😩 But to my surprise, when it was over I felt like I had been in there for 30 minutes - the time flew by!! And not only that, I seriously felt like I could take over the world!! I felt amazingly strong....while also so relaxed and at peace. It was amazing. That got me more interested in yoga. Since then I've tried to research it more and try different yoga apps at home.
There are a TREMENDOUS number of benefits to practicing yoga - but for me personally I focused on a select few that apply best to what I want out of it.
- It's relaxing. Promotes lower levels of stress and helps you to focus on the present and be more relaxed and patient and in the moment. It's safe to say that with 4 kids between the ages of 3-6 in the house, there are MANY days that feel high stress. That feel rushed. I need to get better at my patience. I need to improve the way I react to things with my kids. I need to keep my cool better. Figure out how to yell less. Be more compassionate. Slower to react. More thoughtful. More present in what's happening instead of constantly on the go planning whats next. I think yoga can really help me to do that.
- Helps fight food cravings. It's been shown that practicing yoga makes you more aware. More away of your body and what you are putting into it and how that affects it. The more you practice yoga and the more aware you become of your body, the easier it is for you to say no when the cravings hit! The focus on breathing can help you to slow down and pay more attention to what you are eating, and help you to make better decisions.
- It's beautiful! Now this one isn't necessarily a "benefit "of yoga, but it's one of my favorite parts about it. I obviously spend a good amount of time on social media and I follow a lot of "yoginis" and I can just get lost in looking at their photos of yoga poses. It truly feels like art to me and I would love to be able to create something like that.
So GOAL #1 - practice yoga consistently! Now, if you have read previous posts of mine where I talk about goals, then you know it's important to not be too vague with goals and to give yourself some clear cut parameters or metrics to work towards. I am committing to practicing yoga a minimum of 3 times per week, every week in 2018. I also plan to document the process for you so if you aren't already following me on Instagram then please do!! I will write about updates here in the blog but I will also be posting lots and lots of pictures as I go along with what improvements I have made, the benefits I've seen, etc. SO PLEASE FOLLOW @mama.fit.life on Insta! 🖤
I've always wanted abs. Like so many of you girls out there, you see pictures of these beautiful sculpted abs on these girls and you wonder...WTH?? How in the world did they do that? Well....this year, I'm going to figure it out....or die trying 😂 lol. And I'm going to share it all with each of you. I don't want anything crazy.....just some definition in my tummy that I can be proud of after carrying 4 babies in there 😳 Is that too much for a girl to ask?? 🤔 Again....you'll want to follow the journey on Instagram for this one because I will document my progress...show you the workouts I'm doing, moves I think work the best, etc. And as we all know....uncovering muscle like that is much more about your diet than your workout regimen so I will also be posting a lot of food tips and things I am eating as well. But as a point of reference, here is my starting point as of December 2017 (and don't let the crease lines from my pants in that picture fool you into thinking it's muscles of any kind 😂)
So GOAL # 2 - sculpt some abs! Now it pains me to say this one, but it's really kind of hard to put parameters around this one. I can't predict how they will turn out looking, and I'm not going to be silly enough to post a picture of someone else's abs that are think are fantastic and say that's what I'm going to achieve in 2018 because everyone is different and every body responds in a different way. So that said, sculpting abs is my goal. My plan of attach to get there is to commit to working out my abs 4 times per week. I work them now, but it's not that much of a focus. More of an after though and if I can fit it in to that days workout then I will. But for this goal, I will be making it a point to commit to a focused 4 ab workouts a week! 🙌🏼 Surely a great deal of change will come from that...fingers crossed!
3. Grow the Mama.Fit.Life Community!!
This is the goal that I am MOST excited about it. So if you are new to #MFL and you didn't know, I just started this blogging thing on December 6, 2017 . It's been about 3 weeks now and I'm having a blast!! If you haven't read the first post yet you can read it here. It tells you all about how Mama.Fit.Life came to be. This all started from a few photographs, a couple of encouraging friends, and some passion. In every sense of the word, Mama.Fit.Life is an infant. 3 weeks old and just getting out into the world. Which means I can only imagine what 2018 has in store 🤗
I really want to do this thing right. I want to make it a point to work as hard as I can to grow the #MFL community of women. I want to build a place where women of all kind want to come and engage, and participate, and help other women. Where you come to seek advice, tips, and ideas on ways to better yourself. To find motivation when you aren't feeling it....inspiration when you see the success of others....a sense of family when you realize you aren't the only one facing whatever your dealing with....love when you experience the kind words of other women just like you. I really want to make this thing BIG!!
So GOAL #3 - grow #MFL community! 👯♂️👯♂️👯♂️ Again...this is a little tough to put parameters on...especially because of how new I am in the game. I'm not exactly sure what is realistic and what's not. But that being said...I've come up with a couple of numbers that I am going to strive for and give it my all to hit by December 31, 2018.
- Drive to 25,000 followers on Instagram! @mama.fit.life. I'm currently at 814 😁
- Drive to 5,000 subscribers to the Mama.Fit.Life blog! Currently at 56 👯♂️
Needless to say, you can see that A LOT of work will have to take place to reach those goals. A LOT. But I'm invigorated by the challenge and what reaching those goals could mean for me and for Mama.Fit.Life!! 🙌🏼
The other thing about this goal is I will need your help to achieve it. I need you girls to help me get the word out. Share the website with your friends. Follow me on Instagram....I'm on FB and Pinterest too, but I've realized very quickly how demanding and time consuming it can be to keep up with all of that social media. So for now, while I've got the day job, I'm just focusing on the blog and Instagram. But if you love it so far, and want Mama.Fit.Life to keep on growing and getting better, then please help me share the love! Get involved on the posts too with comments - I would LOVE to hear from all of you!
So to sum up 2018....

Now, I've shared what I'm going to be doing in 2018....what will you be doing?? 🤔 If you haven't figured it out yet, NOW is the time!!! Put some thought into and WRITE IT DOWN! Always helps me to write things down so I can come back to it and see. Makes me feel more accountable. For this particular year I've now written it down for all the world to see 😳 talk about accountability?!?!?! But i'm excited about it! Can't wait to document my journey through this year and share it with each of you girls.
